British rock has come a long way since Cliff Richard exploded as the UK’s overnight pop sensation singing original rock songs and performing on local TV shows with a moody magnetism that initially earned him the title of ‘Britain’s Elvis’.
This week’s newsletter lists a group of Sony/ATV songs which were hits by Cliff during his long, unparalleled career.

Rhino has just released a very cool box-set of British\indie rock and Brit-pop from the 1990’s. Our bulletin lists 5 standout Sony/ATV songs from this collection.

Wyclef confesses!
When Mojo magazine asked him what he sings in the shower, Sony/ATV writer Wyclef Jean replied "music of the 80’s" and named our song TAKE ON ME by A-ha as one of his favorites.
Elvis on the UK charts
Elvis Presley’s original 1969 hit version of IN THE GHETTO entered the UK’s Singles chart this week at #13. It’s part of RCA’s ongoing reissue of Elvis’s hits in Britain. Written by American singer/songwriter Mac Davis, IN THE GHETTO by Elvis made #2 in the UK back in ’69 and the song was successfully revived over there in 1991 by Beats International.

LEGENDARY COUNTRY SONGWRITERS
A new series of songlists spotlighting classic country writers and their hits #2:
ROGER MILLER (1936-1992)
Texas-born Roger Miller was initially a big success in the 1960’s, writing and singing songs which often contained a humorous slant on life. For instance, DANG ME has a tongue-in-cheek lyric ("Dang Me, Dang Me/They oughta take a rope and hang me/High fom the highest tree/Woman would you weep for me") while ENGLAND SWINGS is a jovial American take on what became known in the 60’s as ‘Swinging London’: "England Swings like a pendulum do/Bobbies on bicycles two by two/Westminster Abbey, the tower of Big Ben/The rosy red cheeks of the little chil-dren". His most famous composition is KING OF THE ROAD with its memorable opening phrase: "Trailer for sale or rent/Rooms to let, 50 cents" which contemporary audiences heard Rufus Wainwright and Teddy Thompson sing on the soundtrack of the 2005 box-office smash "Brokeback Mountain". Contrasting with these songs are Roger’s superb love ballads of heartbreak such as HUSBANDS AND WIVES (spectacularly revived by Brooks & Dunn in 1998) and LOCK, STOCK AND TEARDROPS which K.D. Lang unearthed for her critically-acclaimed Owen Bradley-produced album "Shadowland" in 1988.
Roger Miller was an extremely popular entertainer, hosting his own TV show in the mid-60’s and appearing with friends such as Johnny Cash on their own programs. In 1973, he wrote songs for and sang on the soundtrack of the Walt Disney animated movie "Robin Hood". Before his untimely death from cancer in 1992, he had written the successful Broadway musical called "Big River: The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn" which opened on Broadway in 1985 and ran for over 1000 performances.
