For our final newsletter of 2009, we highlight SATV songs recorded by two rock ‘n’ roll legends beginning with…
Rick Nelson
Ricky Nelson (1940-1985) was a teenage idol and a bona fide rock ‘n’ roll star. He was introduced to American audiences on his family’s TV show led by his bandleader father Ozzie and his actress mother Harriet. Sony/ATV’s catalog of songs recorded by Ricky includes the chart-topping 1958 ballad “Poor Little Fool” written by Sharon Sheeley, the girlfriend of rocker Eddie Cochran. Eddie was a friend of Ricky’s as were songwriter/singers Johnny & Dorsey Burnette. Dorsey wrote another of Ricky’s favorite hits “It’s Late”.
Other writers whose names you’ll see on the list below include Jerry Fuller (his compositions include the standout “A Travelin’ Man”, “Young World” plus “It’s Up To You” which was covered in Britain by Billy J. Kramer & The Dakotas) and the late Baker Knight, the guy responsible for such milestones as “Lonesome Town” (revived by Paul McCartney), “I Got A Feeling” and “Never Be Anyone Else But You”.
In a “Now Dig This’ interview with Jim Newcombe, Ricky recalled:
“Baker (Knight) was a good friend of mine too, he was one of the guys – we all used to go to parties and hang out together, me Dorsey & Johnny. Baker wrote some real good songs I think; I really liked his writing, the ballads were great”.
In 1961, Ricky’s name was officially shorten to Rick which you’ll see reflected in some of the listings below. By the mid-60’s, Rick’s musical taste was changing and his interest in country rock began to take shape.
He formed The Stone Canyon Band which included bass player Randy Meisner who’d been with Poco. In 1969, they covered Bob Dylan’s “She Belongs To Me” and three years later, charted with Rick’s own million-selling composition “Garden Party” based on an experience he’d had at an all-star concert at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
